How effective are oral antibiotics for acne in hidradenitis suppurativa?

Hidradenitis suppurativa is an inflammatory condition that can cause tender lumps, draining areas and tunnels in skin folds. An antibiotic chosen for acne may be prescribed for its anti-inflammatory effect as well as its activity against bacteria. Improvement can be gradual, and a response does not prove that the condition is ordinary acne. New lesions may still appear, particularly where friction, sweating or established scarring is present.

The medicine, dose and course length depend on your health history, other medicines and the areas involved. Some people need a different treatment, a combination approach or care directed at persistent tunnels and scars.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if painful or recurring lumps are appearing in the armpits, groin, under the breasts or around the buttocks. Take the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and do not share leftover antibiotics. Tell the clinician about allergies, pregnancy, stomach or bowel problems, liver concerns and every medicine or supplement you use.

Use gentle cleansing, avoid squeezing lesions, and choose loose clothing that reduces rubbing. Keep draining areas covered with suitable dressings and ask whether another treatment is needed if flares continue or scars restrict movement.

Seek prompt medical care for rapidly spreading redness, severe worsening pain, fever, feeling faint, or a large area of swelling. Contact the prescriber urgently for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a widespread blistering rash after a dose. Arrange review when drainage persists, wounds smell unusual, or treatment is causing troublesome diarrhoea or other new symptoms.
