How effective is operative hysteroscopy for uterine septum?

A septate uterus has a band of tissue extending into the uterine cavity. During operative hysteroscopy, the surgeon passes a camera through the vagina and cervix and cuts the septum to create a single cavity. The external shape of the uterus is not treated through this route.

Imaging is important because a septum can resemble another uterine shape variation, and the distinction changes management. Treatment may be considered in the context of recurrent pregnancy loss, infertility, or a documented cavity problem; it is not automatically needed for every person with this anatomy.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed and what outcome the procedure is intended to improve. Discuss the depth of the septum, whether treatment is likely to be completed in one session, and how the cavity will be reviewed during healing.

Follow instructions about medicines and recovery restrictions. Attend planned follow-up before trying to conceive, because the clinician may want to confirm healing and advise on timing and pregnancy monitoring.
