How effective is nutrition support in cancer for head and neck cancer?

Tumours and treatment in the mouth, throat or neck can affect chewing, swallowing, saliva, taste and jaw movement. A dietitian and speech and swallowing specialist can match food texture, drinks and eating methods to the affected area and treatment plan.

Support may include softer or blended foods, high-energy drinks, symptom control and, for some people, tube feeding for a period. It does not remove the cancer or replace cancer treatment. Its value is measured by practical goals such as safer swallowing, adequate fluid intake, preserving strength and completing planned care when possible.

Tell the team early if food sticks, eating takes much longer, your mouth is painful, or liquids make you cough. Choose the texture recommended for your swallowing assessment, take small mouthfuls, and remain upright during and after meals if advised. Do not alter a tube-feeding plan or use supplements without checking the team.

Seek prompt clinical advice for repeated choking, breathing difficulty during meals, inability to swallow fluids, signs of dehydration, or a sudden drop in intake. Fever or new chest symptoms after choking also need urgent attention because food or liquid may have entered the airway.
