How effective is NIPT for Down syndrome?

NIPT analyses placental DNA fragments found in a pregnant person's blood. It estimates the chance of trisomy 21, also called Down syndrome, without entering the uterus. A lower-chance result reduces concern but cannot exclude every condition or replace routine pregnancy care. A higher-chance result does not prove that the fetus has Down syndrome.

Sometimes the laboratory cannot issue a result because there is not enough usable fetal DNA or for another technical reason. The meaning of a result can also be affected by gestational age, a multiple pregnancy, placental differences or maternal factors. Your clinician can explain the result in the context of ultrasound findings and your pregnancy.

Before testing, ask what conditions are included, when the sample can be taken, and how an inconclusive result will be handled. After a higher-chance result, arrange genetic counselling or specialist review. Confirmation may involve chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis, which are diagnostic procedures with their own considerations.

Do not make decisions about the pregnancy from a screening result alone. Review the wording of the report, ultrasound findings, available diagnostic choices and the timing of each option with your maternity team.

Contact your maternity team promptly if the report says higher chance, no result or an unexpected finding, so the next step can be arranged. After an invasive diagnostic procedure, seek urgent advice for heavy bleeding, fluid leakage, fever, severe abdominal pain or contractions. These symptoms need assessment regardless of the screening result.

Ask: What exactly does my result mean? Is this screening or diagnosis? What could explain an inconclusive result? Which diagnostic test is available, and when? How do ultrasound findings change the interpretation? Can I speak with a genetics specialist?
