How effective is neck dissection for mouth cancer?

Mouth cancer can spread through lymphatic channels to nodes in the neck. A surgeon may remove a planned group of nodes during treatment of the mouth tumour, or when scans and examination suggest nodal involvement. The removed nodes are examined in a laboratory. Their findings can clarify the stage and whether cancer has features that make further treatment advisable. A neck dissection does not replace treatment aimed at the original mouth tumour.

Before surgery, ask how the mouth tumour and neck will be treated together, which structures may be affected, and how swallowing, speech, shoulder movement, and appearance may change. After the operation, keep the wound review, follow movement guidance, and wait for the pathology discussion before drawing conclusions. Some people need radiotherapy or another treatment after surgery; the recommendation is based on the tissue findings and personal circumstances.

Report fever, spreading redness, fluid from the wound, increasing swelling, or worsening pain. Get urgent help for breathing problems, fast-growing neck swelling, heavy bleeding, or inability to swallow fluids. Persistent shoulder weakness, tightness, or altered sensation should be raised at follow-up so rehabilitation can be considered.

Ask whether the dissection is for known or possible nodal disease, what the pathology may change, how recovery will be supported, and which signs after discharge require immediate contact.
