How effective is neck dissection for head and neck cancer?

Head and neck cancers can spread to lymph nodes in the neck. During neck dissection, a surgeon removes a planned group of nodes, with nearby tissue or structures included when the cancer requires it. The operation may treat known nodal disease or check for disease that is not obvious on scans. The laboratory examination of removed tissue helps determine whether cancer is present, how many nodes are involved, and whether additional treatment should be discussed.

Before surgery, ask which neck structures are expected to remain intact and whether the operation will be selective, modified, or more extensive. Afterward, follow wound-care and movement advice, attend pathology review, and report changes in swallowing, speech, shoulder movement, or sensation. Surgery may be combined with treatment to the primary tumour, radiotherapy, or systemic treatment. The team uses the final pathology and your overall health to shape the plan.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing neck swelling, redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, rapidly expanding swelling, heavy bleeding, or sudden weakness. New shoulder weakness or numbness also deserves review because rehabilitation or specialist assessment may help.
