How effective is nebuliser treatment for croup?

Croup causes swelling around the voice box and upper windpipe, often producing a barking cough and a harsh sound when breathing in. In a severe episode, a clinician may give nebulised adrenaline to reduce swelling quickly. The effect can wear off, so the child needs observation after treatment and may need another medicine to settle inflammation.

A nebuliser is used for severe symptoms or when a clinician identifies a specific need. It does not treat every barking cough, and using a device at home without medical direction can delay assessment of a narrowing airway.

Keep the child calm and upright, because crying can make noisy breathing worse. Offer small sips if swallowing is comfortable. Avoid forcing the child to lie down, examining the throat, or using steam. Contact a healthcare professional if the cough is accompanied by noisy breathing, especially when the child is resting.

Call emergency services if the child is struggling to breathe, has blue or grey lips, drools or cannot swallow, becomes unusually sleepy, or has pauses in breathing. Seek urgent assessment for a harsh breathing sound at rest, chest pulling-in, or worsening symptoms. Keep the child upright and calm while waiting for help.
