How effective is nebuliser treatment for bronchiolitis?

Bronchiolitis is an infection that causes swelling and mucus in the small airways, most often in babies and young children. A nebuliser does not clear the virus or reliably open these small airways. Medicines delivered by nebuliser may be considered only in a particular clinical situation, rather than as routine treatment.

A child may breathe noisily, cough, feed less, or work harder to breathe. The useful assessment is how comfortably the child breathes, drinks, and stays alert. Children with bronchiolitis can change quickly, so a normal-looking period does not remove the need to watch for worsening signs.

Offer smaller, more frequent feeds and keep the child upright while awake. Clear visible nasal mucus gently if it interferes with feeding or breathing. Keep smoke away and check the child regularly, including during sleep. Do not give nebulised medicine, cough remedies, or antibiotics unless a clinician has prescribed them for this child.

Get emergency help if the child has pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest pulling-in, grunting, or is difficult to wake. Seek urgent medical assessment if feeds are much smaller, wet nappies are clearly reduced, breathing is becoming harder, or the child seems unusually sleepy. Very young infants and children with underlying conditions need a lower threshold for review.

Ask how to count wet nappies, which breathing changes matter, and how often to offer fluids. Check whether this child has any reason to need treatment beyond supportive care and when a follow-up review is needed.
