What the procedure addresses

A subungual haematoma is blood trapped under the nail after a crush, impact, or repeated pressure. A clinician may make a small opening to let pressure out when the injury is recent and throbbing. This can ease discomfort, but it does not repair a broken bone, torn nail bed, or damaged fingertip. The bruise may still move outward as the nail grows.

A dark nail is not always a bruise. If there was no clear injury, or the colour does not grow out, examination is especially important.

What to do after an injury

Keep the hand or foot raised soon after the injury, use a wrapped cold pack briefly, and avoid pressure on the nail. Do not drill, burn, or puncture it yourself. A clinician can decide whether drainage, imaging, wound care, or simple protection is appropriate.

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment after a crush injury with severe pain, numbness, deformity, an open wound, inability to move the digit, or a nail that is partly torn away. Get medical review for increasing redness, pus, warmth, fever, or pain that worsens instead of easing.
