How effective is myomectomy for uterine fibroids?

A myomectomy removes one or more uterine fibroids and leaves the uterus in place. It may reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, pain, frequent urination or bowel pressure when those symptoms are caused by fibroids. The route may be hysteroscopic, laparoscopic or open, depending on where the fibroids are and how they affect the uterus.

The operation does not prevent new fibroids from developing, so symptoms can return. Fertility and pregnancy planning require an individual discussion because the number and depth of uterine incisions, healing time and future pregnancy recommendations vary. Myomectomy may not address symptoms from another condition.

Your assessment may include a pelvic examination and imaging to map the fibroids. Tell the clinician whether your priority is bleeding control, pain relief, preserving the uterus or pregnancy planning. Discuss medicines and less invasive options as well as surgery, because the best choice depends on symptoms and reproductive plans.

Ask which surgical route is suitable, how long recovery may take, how bleeding will be managed, and when you can resume work, exercise and sex. Follow instructions about medication, wound care and follow-up. Keep a record of bleeding, pain and pressure symptoms so improvement can be judged clearly.

Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding, faintness, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, shortness of breath or a swollen painful leg after surgery. Contact the surgical team for a wound that is red or draining, difficulty passing urine, or bleeding that is becoming heavier rather than settling. New or returning symptoms also deserve review.
