How effective is mole removal for an atypical mole?

An atypical mole can have uneven colour, shape, or borders without being cancer. A clinician may recommend removal when examination or change makes laboratory assessment useful. Depending on the lesion, the procedure may remove the whole mole or take a sample. A pathologist examines the tissue and the result helps determine whether any further treatment or observation is appropriate. Removal can stop irritation from a raised lesion and may improve its appearance, although a scar remains possible. It cannot prevent unrelated moles from changing later.

Tell the clinician about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, previous reactions to local anaesthetic, and any personal or family history of skin cancer. Keep the wound clean and covered as directed, do not pick the healing surface, and protect it from sun. Confirm when and how you will receive the laboratory result. Keep a record or photographs of other moles if your clinician recommends skin surveillance.

Call the clinic if bleeding continues despite pressure, the wound opens, or pain, redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge is increasing. Seek urgent care for severe bleeding, faintness, or a serious allergic reaction. Arrange a skin assessment for a mole that changes in size, shape, colour, or sensation, or that repeatedly bleeds or crusts.
