How effective is methotrexate treatment for psoriasis?

Methotrexate dampens immune activity that contributes to psoriasis. It may be considered for extensive, persistent, or functionally disruptive disease, including some joint symptoms, when a clinician judges it appropriate. Improvement is assessed over follow-up rather than from a single dose. It may help skin and joints differently, and another treatment may be chosen if control is inadequate or side effects occur.

Take methotrexate only on the prescribed schedule; taking it more often can be dangerous. Attend blood-test appointments and tell the prescriber about liver disease, kidney problems, heavy alcohol use, infections, vaccines, and every medicine or supplement. Folic acid may be prescribed. Discuss pregnancy, breastfeeding, and contraception before starting or continuing treatment.

Seek urgent medical advice for fever or infection symptoms, unusual bruising or bleeding, severe mouth sores, persistent vomiting, yellowing of the skin, dark urine, or breathing difficulty. Do not take an extra dose after a missed dose without specific instructions.
