What a sweep involves
During an examination, a midwife or doctor places a gloved finger at the cervix and gently separates the membranes from the lower uterus. This releases local substances that may encourage the cervix to soften and contractions to start. The sweep is only possible when the cervix can be reached, and your clinician should explain the examination beforehand.
Period-like cramps, pelvic pressure, spotting, or irregular contractions can follow. These effects do not always develop into established labour. If labour does not start, your maternity team will review your pregnancy, the cervix, and the plan for induction or continued monitoring.
What to do after a sweep
Plan to rest and use a pad if you have spotting or a small amount of bleeding. Note contraction timing, fluid leakage, and your baby's movements. Follow your maternity unit's instructions about when to call, and attend the next appointment even if you have cramps or a show.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity unit for fresh or heavy bleeding, suspected waters breaking, painful regular contractions, fever, or reduced or changed baby movements. Seek urgent advice for severe constant abdominal pain or if you feel seriously unwell.
