How effective is medical management of miscarriage for missed miscarriage?

The prescribed medicine causes the cervix and uterus to change so bleeding and cramping can pass the pregnancy tissue. The process may begin within hours or take longer, and bleeding can be heavier than a normal period. Your care team may provide pain relief and explain what tissue or clots may look like.

A missed miscarriage may have few symptoms before treatment, so a later check is important even if bleeding occurs. Examination, an ultrasound, or pregnancy-hormone testing may be used to see whether tissue remains. If the uterus has not emptied, your clinician can discuss another dose, a procedure, or observation.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and arrange support at home if possible. Use sanitary pads so you can observe bleeding, drink fluids, and follow the agreed pain-relief plan. Keep the follow-up appointment and ask when to restart normal activities, exercise, intercourse, or attempts to conceive.

Call your maternity or gynaecology service urgently for very heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, fever, chills, dizziness, fainting, or discharge with an unpleasant smell. Seek emergency care if you feel weak or unwell with heavy bleeding, or if you develop sudden severe pain.

Ask: Which medicine will I use and when? How should I manage cramps? How will we know the miscarriage is complete? What happens if bleeding does not start? Which symptoms need urgent attention?
