How effective is lymphoedema therapy for breast cancer?

After breast cancer surgery or radiotherapy, lymph vessels or lymph nodes may carry fluid less efficiently. Fluid can collect in the breast, chest, arm or hand. A trained therapist may use gentle manual techniques, compression garments, exercises and skin-care advice to support drainage and reduce the feeling of fullness.

Results vary with the location and duration of swelling, skin condition, range of movement and general health. Therapy may make the area feel lighter and less tense, help clothing fit more comfortably and support use of the arm. It manages lymphoedema rather than removing the underlying change in the lymphatic system.

Ask for assessment by a lymphoedema specialist who understands breast cancer rehabilitation. The plan may begin with regular appointments and then shift toward a home routine. Wear compression only in the way advised, practise the prescribed movements, moisturise intact skin and protect the affected area from cuts, burns and tight pressure.

Track changes in swelling, heaviness, skin tightness and arm movement. Bring the garment to review if it rolls, pinches, slips or leaves painful marks; an adjustment may be needed. Do not massage a newly painful, hot or red area without clinical advice.

Contact your cancer or rehabilitation team promptly if swelling increases suddenly, the skin becomes hot or red, pain escalates, or you develop fever or feel unwell. These changes can signal infection or another problem needing assessment. Seek urgent help for sudden breathlessness, chest pain or marked weakness.
