How effective is lung lobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer?

Non-small cell lung cancer includes several tumour types. Scans establish the tumour’s position and stage, while sampling may identify its type and molecular features. During lobectomy, nearby lymph nodes are commonly assessed, and the removed tissue is examined for margins and other features.

A clear operation may remove the known cancer, but the pathology can show a need for treatment afterward. Depending on the findings, the team may discuss chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted treatment or radiation. If breathing tests show that a lobectomy would leave too little reserve, a smaller operation or another approach may be considered.

Ask how your stage, tumour location and lymph-node results affect the choice of lobectomy. Review breathing tests, heart assessment and the planned surgical approach, including pain control and breathing exercises.

Call the care team for a fever, worsening breathlessness, increasing chest pain, new drowsiness, persistent vomiting, foul wound drainage or a wound that opens. Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, fainting, sudden chest pain or substantial coughing of blood.
