How effective is laser toning for acanthosis nigricans?

Acanthosis nigricans often creates darker, thicker, velvety skin in folds such as the neck, underarms or groin. Laser toning targets pigment, so it may soften colour; it may not fully change the thickened texture. Pigment can return if the driver continues, and irritation from an overly aggressive approach can make darkening more noticeable, especially in richly pigmented skin.

Arrange an assessment to confirm the diagnosis and discuss possible contributors such as insulin resistance, hormonal conditions or medicines. A clinician may recommend addressing that contributor before or alongside cosmetic treatment. Avoid scrubbing, bleaching mixtures and friction in the affected fold. If laser toning is chosen, ask about a test area, conservative settings, spacing between sessions and a simple aftercare plan.

Seek medical review if the dark, thickened skin appears quickly, spreads widely or comes with other new symptoms. Contact the clinic for increasing pain, blistering, crusting, discharge or prolonged colour change after treatment. A new fold rash with itch, scale or odour may need a different diagnosis and treatment.

Ask how the diagnosis was made, what may be driving the skin change, and whether treatment should begin with that cause. Ask what improvement is realistic for colour and texture, how your skin tone changes the plan, and how recurrence would be managed.
