How effective is laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy for ovarian torsion?

Ovarian torsion happens when the ovary twists around its supporting tissues and may reduce its blood supply. It commonly causes sudden, strong one-sided pelvic pain and may cause nausea or vomiting. Laparoscopy lets the surgeon inspect the ovary, untwist it and decide whether the cyst should be removed during the same operation. The final procedure depends on blood flow, tissue appearance, cyst features and the person’s age and fertility goals.

Cystectomy may address the trigger, but it is not a substitute for urgent torsion treatment. Waiting for symptoms to settle at home can allow damage to progress.

Seek emergency medical assessment for sudden severe pelvic pain, especially with nausea or vomiting. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell. At hospital, imaging and examination help guide urgent care, but a scan cannot always exclude torsion. Tell the team about pregnancy possibility, previous ovarian problems and fertility priorities.

Go to emergency care immediately for sudden severe one-sided pelvic or abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, collapse or a rigid or very tender abdomen. After surgery, contact the team for worsening pain, fever, persistent vomiting, heavy bleeding, wound changes or difficulty passing urine. Chest pain or breathlessness also requires emergency help.

Ask whether the ovary was successfully untwisted, why cystectomy was or was not performed, what was seen during surgery, and what follow-up is needed for the other ovary, fertility and future cyst risk.
