How effective is laminectomy for spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis narrows the canal or the spaces where nerves pass. Laminectomy removes part of the vertebral arch to enlarge that space. It is most useful when leg pain, heaviness, numbness or limited walking is linked to nerve compression. Back pain from discs, joints or muscle may respond differently.

Many people judge improvement by standing longer, walking farther, needing fewer rests or having less leg discomfort. The operation does not stop every degenerative change, and a surgeon may discuss decompression with fusion when the spine is unstable or a wider operation could affect stability. Imaging findings must be matched with symptoms and examination.

Record how far you can walk, what brings symptoms on, whether sitting helps, and whether weakness or numbness is changing. Discuss physiotherapy, medication or injections already tried, and ask whether your symptoms fit the scan. After surgery, walk in short supported periods as advised, increase activity gradually, and complete exercises for leg strength and trunk control.

Avoid heavy lifting and twisting until cleared. Arrange help for bathing, shopping or stairs if balance is limited, and keep follow-up visits so persistent or returning symptoms can be assessed.

Seek urgent help for new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around the saddle area, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or inability to walk safely. After laminectomy, contact the surgical team for fever, wound drainage, severe new pain, or new weakness or loss of bladder control. Calf swelling or sudden breathlessness also needs urgent medical attention.
