How effective is lactation consultation for mastitis?

Mastitis involves inflammation of breast tissue and can cause a painful, swollen area, warmth, redness and feeling unwell. A consultant can assess attachment, feeding positions and pump use, then help you choose a pattern that removes milk without unnecessary stimulation. They may also help with nipple trauma, engorgement or a missed feed that has made feeding harder.

Some episodes settle with supportive measures, while others need a clinician to consider antibiotics or another treatment. Lactation support is complementary: it addresses practical feeding problems and helps protect your milk supply and comfort during recovery.

Feed or express in response to your baby’s needs and stop short of forceful emptying. Rest, drink to thirst and use cool packs for swelling. Ask the consultant to check pump settings and flange fit, especially if pumping is painful. Do not use vigorous massage or suddenly stop breastfeeding without advice, as either can increase discomfort or disrupt feeding.

Arrange medical assessment if you have fever, chills, worsening redness, escalating pain, pus-like discharge or feel generally ill. Seek prompt review if symptoms are not easing, return repeatedly or a firm area remains, because a collection of fluid may need examination. Get urgent help for severe weakness, confusion or trouble breathing.

Ask what features suggest inflammatory mastitis, whether medication is needed, how to continue feeding safely, and what changes to pumping or attachment could reduce further irritation.
