How effective is kyphoplasty for vertebral compression fracture?

During kyphoplasty, a clinician guides a small balloon into a collapsed vertebra and then places bone cement in the created space. The aim is to stabilise the fracture and reduce pain; some vertebral height may be restored. It is generally considered after imaging and a clinical review, especially when pain remains limiting despite appropriate non-operative care. It does not rebuild general bone strength, correct every spinal deformity, or remove the need to address osteoporosis when present.

Discuss whether the fracture is recent, still painful, and suitable for the procedure. Tell the treating team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, infection, breathing problems, and other health conditions. Ask what activity limits apply afterward and how pain control, walking, physiotherapy, and bone-health treatment will fit together. Follow wound and movement instructions, and avoid lifting or twisting until your team gives clear guidance.

Seek urgent help for new weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or difficulty walking after a spinal fracture or procedure. Contact your clinical team promptly for fever, worsening back pain, redness or drainage at the puncture site, chest symptoms, or sudden breathlessness. New pain in another spinal area also deserves review rather than self-treatment.
