How effective is joint aspiration for pseudogout?

Pseudogout, also called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, can cause sudden pain, swelling, warmth, and restricted movement in a joint. A needle removes a sample of fluid for laboratory examination. Finding calcium pyrophosphate crystals supports the diagnosis, while other tests can check for infection. Removing some fluid may reduce pressure, but aspiration is not a complete flare treatment and cannot clear crystals already present in the joint. A clinician may combine it with other measures based on your health and the affected joint.

Describe when the pain began, whether you have had earlier attacks, and all medicines or health conditions that may affect treatment. Rest the joint as advised and do not apply unprescribed remedies to the needle site afterward. The clinician may discuss anti-inflammatory treatment, an ice pack wrapped in cloth, and a plan for future flares. Follow the specific instructions given for your joint and medicines.

A sudden hot, swollen, painful joint deserves prompt assessment because infection can look similar to pseudogout. Seek urgent care for fever, chills, feeling very unwell, rapidly worsening pain, inability to use the limb, or redness spreading beyond the joint.
