How effective is joint aspiration for knee bursitis?

Short answer
Joint aspiration can provide useful pressure relief for knee bursitis, but its benefit depends on the cause of the fluid and whether the bursa refills.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main benefit
- May reduce pressure and improve movement when fluid is prominent.
- What it cannot do
- It does not remove the cause of repeated bursal irritation.
What effectiveness means here
A clinician uses a needle to remove fluid from the bursa, the small cushion over or around the kneecap. This can ease tightness and make bending or kneeling more comfortable. The withdrawn fluid may be examined when infection, bleeding, or crystal inflammation is a concern. Aspiration treats the collection of fluid; it does not remove the irritation that caused it. Repeated kneeling, a blow, skin infection, or an inflammatory condition can allow swelling to return.
What to do before and after aspiration
Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines, diabetes, skin problems, fever, and any recent injury. Afterward, follow the advised dressing and activity plan, keep pressure off the front of the knee, and watch whether swelling, redness, or pain changes. A compression wrap, rest from kneeling, and treatment of the underlying irritation may be recommended. Do not try to drain the bursa yourself.
When to seek care promptly
Seek prompt medical assessment for a rapidly enlarging swelling, increasing warmth or redness, fever, chills, pus, severe pain, or difficulty moving the knee. These features can occur with an infected bursa and need assessment rather than relying on aspiration alone. After the procedure, worsening pain, spreading redness, drainage, or fever also warrants prompt contact with a clinician.
Questions for your doctor
Could the fluid be tested for infection, blood, or crystals? What activity may have triggered the bursitis? How will we reduce the chance of the swelling returning? What symptoms after aspiration should make me call the clinic?

Questions people ask
Does aspiration cure knee bursitis?
It can relieve a fluid-filled swelling, but lasting improvement usually also requires addressing pressure, injury, or inflammation affecting the bursa.
Can the knee bursa refill after aspiration?
Yes. Refilling is possible if the irritation continues, so activity changes and treatment of the cause may be part of the plan.
