How effective is JAK inhibitor treatment for vitiligo?

Vitiligo causes areas of skin to lose pigment when pigment-producing cells are affected. JAK inhibitors can reduce immune signalling associated with active disease, giving pigment cells an opportunity to return or function. Facial areas may respond differently from hands, feet, or other sites, and colour may return gradually rather than evenly.

A dermatologist may combine a JAK inhibitor with light-based treatment when appropriate. The aim may be stabilising new patches, repigmenting existing areas, or both. Results are individual, and colour can fade again if disease activity returns or treatment is stopped.

Apply or take the medicine exactly as directed and keep review appointments. Tell the clinician about infections, cold sores, liver or blood problems, pregnancy plans, and other medicines. Use broad-spectrum sun protection because depigmented skin burns more easily, and avoid tanning that can make colour contrast more noticeable.

Take consistent photographs in similar lighting to discuss at follow-up. Do not rub, pick, or irritate the patches, and ask before adding light therapy or over-the-counter products so the schedule remains safe and coherent.

Contact the care team for signs of infection, a rapidly expanding rash, severe irritation, or new eye symptoms. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath. Arrange a review if new white patches continue to appear despite treatment.

Ask which sites are realistic targets, whether light therapy could be useful, how activity and repigmentation will be measured, and what maintenance plan may protect any colour that returns.
