How effective is IVF for unexplained infertility?

Unexplained infertility is used when routine assessment has not found a clear reason for difficulty conceiving. It does not mean that nothing biological is happening; some factors are difficult to measure with standard tests. IVF adds information and control to several stages: eggs can be collected, fertilisation can be observed, embryo development can be followed and an embryo can be placed in the uterus. Even so, implantation and ongoing pregnancy depend on age, embryo biology, sperm, the uterine environment and factors that may remain hidden.

Ask your fertility specialist which investigations have been completed and whether any should be repeated or expanded before IVF. Discuss options such as continued timed attempts, medicines, insemination or IVF in light of duration, age, emotional wellbeing and prior treatment. If IVF is chosen, ask how eggs, sperm and embryos will be assessed, how many embryos may be transferred and what happens to stored embryos. A shared plan should include likely appointments, medicines and support.

Arrange a fertility review when conception has not occurred after ongoing attempts, or sooner if periods are irregular, there is pelvic pain, previous pelvic surgery or a known fertility concern. During IVF, contact the clinic urgently for severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling. Fever or severe pain after egg collection also warrants prompt advice. A clinical assessment is needed to identify complications and decide whether treatment should pause or change.
