How effective is IV fluid therapy for heat stroke?

Heat stroke is a medical emergency involving dangerous overheating and possible changes in brain function, such as confusion, unusual behaviour, seizure or collapse. IV fluids can help manage fluid loss and circulation under clinical monitoring. They do not cool the body quickly enough on their own and do not address every effect of severe overheating. Hospital teams may use several treatments at once.

Call emergency services immediately. Move the person out of heat, remove unnecessary clothing and cool the skin with water, wet cloths, fans or cold packs while help is coming. Place an unconscious person on their side and monitor breathing. Do not give drinks to someone confused, drowsy or unable to swallow safely.

Any altered mental state, seizure, collapse, extreme heat, severe weakness or breathing difficulty after heat exposure needs emergency care. Do not wait to see whether rest or an IV infusion alone works. Heat stroke can damage organs even if the person briefly seems better.

Once safe, ask what caused the episode, how hydration and medicines should be managed, and when work, sport or heat exposure can resume. Ask which symptoms should trigger immediate reassessment.
