How effective is IV fluid therapy for food poisoning?

Food poisoning can remove water and salts from the body. Fluid given through a vein reaches the circulation directly, which may improve dizziness, weakness, dry mouth and reduced urination when these are caused by dehydration. It does not remove the infection or stop every episode of vomiting or diarrhoea. A clinician chooses the fluid and amount after considering symptoms, examination findings, age and medical conditions.

If you can keep fluids down, take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Rest and avoid alcohol. Seek assessment if repeated vomiting makes drinking unsuccessful, or if diarrhoea is causing marked weakness. Do not arrange IV fluids as a substitute for evaluation, because abdominal pain, fever or blood in stool may need a different assessment.

Get urgent medical help for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, very little or no urine, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or trouble breathing. Children, older adults, pregnant people and those with kidney or heart disease can become dehydrated more quickly and should seek advice early.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest dehydration, whether oral rehydration is enough, and which warning signs should prompt a return visit. Tell the clinician about your urine output, vomiting, diarrhoea, medicines and long-term conditions.
