How effective is IV fluid therapy for dehydration?

Short answer
IV fluid therapy can restore hydration efficiently when dehydration is severe or oral fluids cannot be taken or absorbed, but the cause and ongoing losses still need treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Clinical signs, urine output and ongoing losses guide fluid adjustment.
What the treatment changes
Fluids given through a vein enter the bloodstream directly. This can support circulation and replace water and electrolytes when vomiting, diarrhoea, heat illness or another problem has made drinking difficult. Clinicians choose the fluid and amount after checking symptoms, pulse, blood pressure, urine output and other factors.
IV treatment is not automatically needed for mild dehydration, when drinking is safe and effective. It also does not cure the cause, such as infection, ongoing bleeding or medication-related fluid loss. Improvement is assessed during treatment rather than assumed from receiving a drip.
Using fluids appropriately
Seek clinical assessment if dehydration is more than mild or the person cannot keep fluids down. If they are alert and able to swallow, oral rehydration solution may be recommended. Do not force drinks in someone who is confused, very drowsy or at risk of choking.
During IV treatment, tell staff about heart, kidney or liver conditions, pregnancy and medicines. Report pain, swelling, breathlessness, chills or a rash around the cannula or during the infusion. Continue the advised plan for the illness causing fluid loss.
When to seek urgent care
Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, rapid worsening, inability to drink, repeated vomiting, severe diarrhoea or signs of shock such as cold clammy skin. Children, older adults and people with significant medical conditions can deteriorate quickly and should be assessed early.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what caused the dehydration, whether oral rehydration is suitable, which warning signs to watch for, how fluid balance will be monitored, and when you can safely return to normal drinking.

Questions people ask
Is a drip needed for every case of dehydration?
No. Mild cases may improve with suitable oral fluids; IV treatment is considered when dehydration is severe or oral replacement fails.
Will IV fluids treat the illness causing dehydration?
No. They replace losses while the underlying cause is assessed and treated separately.
