How effective is IV fluid therapy for cholera?

Cholera can cause sudden, large losses of water and electrolytes through watery diarrhoea and vomiting. Fluids delivered into a vein enter the circulation directly, helping support blood pressure, kidney function and alertness while the losses are managed.

IV fluids replace what has been lost; they do not remove the infection or stop diarrhoea by themselves. Oral rehydration solution may be introduced when the person is awake and able to drink, and clinicians may provide additional treatment for cholera according to the situation.

Cholera with signs of dehydration is an emergency. Seek medical care promptly and tell the team about the amount and duration of diarrhoea or vomiting. While waiting for help, use oral rehydration solution if the person is alert and can swallow; do not delay urgent care when drinking is impossible or losses are continuing.

In hospital, staff assess circulation, urine output, mental alertness and ongoing losses, then adjust fluids. Hand hygiene and safe handling of stool and vomit help reduce spread to other people.

Go to emergency care for very thirsty or unable-to-drink states, repeated vomiting, little urine, sunken eyes, marked weakness, confusion, fainting or cold hands and feet. Rapidly worsening watery diarrhoea also needs urgent assessment, especially in children, older adults and people with other medical conditions.

Ask how severe the dehydration is, which fluids are needed, when drinking can restart, how ongoing stool losses will be replaced, and what infection-control steps your household should follow.
