How effective is IUI for female infertility?

Intrauterine insemination places prepared sperm inside the uterus around the time an egg is released. This shortens the journey sperm must make through the cervix. It still relies on ovulation, at least one open fallopian tube, and sperm reaching and fertilising an egg.

IUI may be considered with ovulation problems, cervical factors, or infertility without an identified cause. It is less suitable when both tubes are blocked or when other findings make direct fertilisation outside the body more appropriate.

Your fertility team may check ovulation, ovarian reserve, the uterus, fallopian tubes, and semen before recommending IUI. Treatment can use a natural cycle or medicine to stimulate ovulation, followed by monitoring and insemination at a planned time.

Ask how many attempts will be reviewed before changing approach. A negative cycle does not identify a single cause; the team interprets it alongside your age, test results, response to medicines, and treatment preferences.

Contact the clinic for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fever, faintness, or breathing difficulty after treatment. If ovulation medicines cause marked abdominal swelling, vomiting, or rapidly worsening discomfort, seek urgent advice because medication-related complications need assessment.

Ask whether your tubes are open, whether stimulation is recommended, how ovulation will be tracked, what signs require urgent contact, and when another treatment should be considered.
