How effective is iontophoresis for hyperhidrosis?

Short answer
Iontophoresis can noticeably reduce sweating in treated areas for many people with hyperhidrosis, but control requires a regular schedule and maintenance sessions.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How iontophoresis works
During treatment, the hands or feet sit in shallow trays of water while a mild electrical current passes through the water. The current temporarily reduces sweat-gland activity in the treated skin. It is a local treatment, so it does not address sweating from areas that are not placed in the trays. The effect gradually wears off when treatment stops, which is why a maintenance routine matters.
Getting useful results
Use the device exactly as instructed and keep the skin intact during treatment. Do not place jewellery in the trays, and tell the clinician about implanted electrical devices, pregnancy, reduced sensation, or skin conditions affecting the treatment area before starting. Mild tingling, dryness, or irritation can occur; report discomfort rather than increasing the current yourself. A clinician can help choose a schedule, assess progress, and consider alternatives if sweating remains disruptive.
When to seek care
Stop a session and seek advice if you develop marked pain, a burn-like area, persistent numbness, blistering, or significant swelling. Arrange medical review when sweating starts suddenly, occurs mainly during sleep, or comes with fever, dizziness, palpitations, weight change, or a new medicine, because another health issue may need checking. Persistent symptoms despite careful use also deserve a treatment review.
Questions for your doctor
Which body areas can we treat? How should I adjust the schedule if my skin becomes dry? When should we judge the response? What options are available if iontophoresis is not enough?

Questions people ask
Does iontophoresis permanently stop sweating?
No. Its effect is temporary, so sweating can return when maintenance is stopped.
Can I use it on every body area?
The usual setup treats hands or feet; other areas require specific clinical advice and equipment.
