How effective is steroid injection for nail psoriasis?

Nail psoriasis may cause pits, grooves, separation from the nail bed, discoloration, crumbling, or thickening. The relevant inflammation can involve the nail matrix, nail bed, or surrounding skin. A dermatologist may inject steroid near the structure involved, aiming to reduce inflammation and support healthier nail growth. The existing nail does not instantly change; clearer nail must grow forward from the matrix and attached nail bed. An injection may be less suitable when many nails are affected or when infection has not been excluded.

Before treatment, the clinician may inspect the nail and test a crumbly or discoloured nail for fungus because both problems can coexist or look similar. Share any joint pain, scalp or skin psoriasis, medicines, diabetes, circulation problems, and previous injection reactions. Keep nails short, avoid biting and picking, and protect hands from repeated wet work or trauma. Follow the clinic’s dressing and cleaning instructions after the procedure. Do not judge the result only by the old nail plate; the growth at the base is more useful to monitor.

Call the clinic if the injected area develops increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, or skin breakdown. Prompt assessment is needed for fever or redness spreading around the finger or toe. Arrange review if nail separation, crumbling, colour change, or pain progresses, or if several nails become involved, since the diagnosis and treatment plan may need reassessment.

Ask which nail structure is affected, whether fungus has been checked, how progress will be measured as the nail grows, and whether a topical or whole-body treatment would be more suitable. Discuss injection discomfort, skin thinning or colour change, joint symptoms, and follow-up.
