How effective is steroid injection into the skin for a skin cyst?

A skin cyst is a sac beneath the skin that can contain keratin. When its lining becomes inflamed, the area may swell, feel sore, or look red. Injecting steroid into the lesion can quiet that inflammatory response and may make the lump less uncomfortable. The medicine does not drain the cyst contents and does not reliably eliminate the lining, so the lump can return or flare again.

A clinician should first check that the lump fits a cyst and is not an abscess or another skin growth. An injection may be unsuitable when there is an active infection requiring drainage or other treatment.

Arrange an assessment if the cyst is painful, growing, repeatedly inflamed, or catching on clothing. Do not squeeze, puncture, or attempt to empty it at home, because this can worsen inflammation and introduce infection. If the main goal is definitive removal, ask whether a procedure that removes the cyst wall is more appropriate after inflammation settles. Follow the aftercare instructions for the injection and report worsening redness, drainage, or pain.

Seek prompt medical care for rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, marked warmth, fever, severe pain, or pus. These features can indicate an abscess or spreading infection and may need treatment other than an injection. Seek evaluation for a firm, bleeding, ulcerated, or persistently changing lump, especially if its diagnosis has not been confirmed.

Ask whether the lump is an uncomplicated cyst, whether steroid injection is suitable while it is inflamed, and what signs would mean you need drainage or removal. You can also ask how recurrence will be handled and which aftercare symptoms should be reported.
