How effective is inhaler therapy for COPD?

Bronchodilator inhalers relax airway muscle, helping air move more freely and making activities easier. Some people use a long-acting inhaler regularly, while a short-acting medicine may be used for sudden symptoms. Inhaled steroids are reserved for selected COPD patterns and can reduce flare-ups for some people, but are not suitable for everyone. Inhalers do not remove the underlying lung changes, so benefit is judged by symptoms, activity, and flare-ups.

Have a clinician check your inhaler technique and confirm that the device suits your grip, breathing pattern, and eyesight. Take maintenance inhalers on schedule and keep rescue medicine available if prescribed. Avoid smoke exposure, stay active within safe limits, and attend reviews so treatment can be adjusted when breathlessness changes.

Contact a clinician promptly for a clear increase in breathlessness, cough, sputum, or sputum colour. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, confusion, blue or grey lips, chest pain, or inability to speak in full sentences. Follow your COPD action plan if one has been provided.
