How effective is induction of labour for pre-eclampsia?

Pre-eclampsia involves high blood pressure developing during pregnancy and may affect organs such as the kidneys or liver. It can also affect the placenta and your baby's growth or wellbeing. The maternity team considers blood pressure readings, symptoms, blood and urine tests, pregnancy stage, and fetal assessment when deciding whether to continue monitoring or recommend birth.

Induction does not treat every effect of pre-eclampsia at once; it starts the birth process so the pregnancy can end when that is the safer course. You may need close observation, blood-pressure treatment, or medication to reduce seizure risk during the birth period. If induction is not suitable or does not progress safely, the team will explain another birth plan.

Follow the maternity team's monitoring and medication plan exactly, and do not miss blood-pressure checks. Rest as advised while remaining alert to changes in symptoms. Bring your medicines and maternity records if you are asked to attend hospital.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for a severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, severe pain beneath the ribs, sudden breathlessness, vomiting, confusion, or feeling very unwell. Contact the unit immediately for reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, or leaking fluid.
