How effective is induction of labour for oligohydramnios?

Oligohydramnios means there is less amniotic fluid than expected. Ultrasound measurements help the maternity team assess fluid, while growth checks, fetal movement, and heart-rate monitoring add information about your baby's wellbeing. The finding can have different causes, so the timing of birth is individual.

Induction may be offered when the team believes birth is safer than waiting. A cervical preparation medicine or device may be used before contractions are stimulated. Low fluid does not by itself determine how quickly labour will begin, and induction can still take time. The team monitors contractions and the baby's heart rate and may change the plan if either of you needs additional support.

Attend ultrasound and antenatal monitoring as arranged, and notice your baby's usual movement pattern. Tell your maternity team if movement changes, fluid leaks, or you develop bleeding or painful contractions. Ask whether you should come directly to the unit if your waters break.

Contact your maternity unit immediately if your baby is moving less than usual, you think your waters have broken, or you have vaginal bleeding. Urgent assessment is also needed for regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, fever, or feeling faint or unwell.

Ask how low the fluid is, what other monitoring shows, and why induction is advised at this point. Ask how your cervix will be assessed, how long the preparation may take, how the baby's heart rate will be monitored, and what the next step would be if labour does not progress.
