How effective is immunotherapy for stomach cancer?

Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognise and attack cancer cells. It may be considered before or after other treatment in selected settings, or for stomach cancer that cannot be removed or has spread. The pathology team may test tumour features such as PD-L1, mismatch repair or microsatellite status because these findings can influence treatment choices.

The aim may be to shrink the cancer, slow its growth, relieve symptoms or reduce the chance of return. Doctors use scans, examinations, blood tests and changes in appetite, pain, vomiting or weight to assess the overall picture. Immune-related effects can involve the bowel, liver, lungs, skin or hormone glands.

Ask which pathology results support immunotherapy and whether it will be combined with chemotherapy or another medicine. Discuss nutrition, nausea, pain and any difficulty eating before treatment begins. Tell your team about autoimmune disease, transplant history, steroid treatment and all medicines or supplements. Report new symptoms between visits, because early review can prevent a manageable side effect from becoming more serious.

Contact your treatment team promptly for persistent vomiting, inability to drink, severe diarrhoea, black stools, yellow skin, new breathlessness, a widespread rash, fever or unusual confusion. Seek emergency help for severe dehydration, vomiting blood, collapse or serious breathing difficulty.
