How effective is immunotherapy for kidney cancer?

Kidney cancer, often renal cell carcinoma, can be treated with medicines that help immune cells recognise and attack cancer. In some people the disease shrinks or remains controlled; in others it continues to grow or causes side effects that require a change in plan. The team reviews scans, symptoms, blood tests and kidney function. It may also consider whether immunotherapy is combined with a targeted medicine or used after another approach.

Ask which kidney cancer features and scan findings guide the recommendation. Share any kidney disease, transplant history, autoimmune illness and current medicines. Discuss how blood pressure, kidney function, liver tests and symptoms will be followed. Keep a written list of new problems and bring it to each visit; do not wait for the next appointment if symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening.

Promptly report much less urine, swelling, severe diarrhoea, new breathlessness, chest pain, yellow skin, dark urine, severe headache, confusion or a widespread rash. These may indicate inflammation or changes affecting the kidneys, lungs, liver, bowel or nervous system. Seek emergency care for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, sudden confusion or chest pain.
