Response may be seen as tumour shrinkage, slower growth or improved symptoms, and it is followed with scans, examination and blood tests.

Ask whether your biopsy has been tested for features that influence immunotherapy. Share details of bowel symptoms, operations, medicines and immune conditions. Clarify whether treatment is intended alone or with another therapy, how often you will attend, and how the team will respond if scans show mixed changes. Keep contact details for the oncology unit and report new symptoms between visits.

Contact the oncology team promptly for persistent diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, blood in the stool, vomiting that prevents fluids, new breathlessness, yellow skin, severe rash, confusion or a major change in urine. These can signal bowel inflammation, dehydration or inflammation in another organ. Seek emergency care for collapse, severe breathing difficulty or intense abdominal pain with a swollen abdomen.
