How effective is immunotherapy for bladder cancer?

Bladder cancer is often urothelial carcinoma, and immune medicines work by helping the immune system recognise and attack cancer cells. Some tumours respond by shrinking or stopping growth; others may not respond, or may respond for a limited time. Treatment may be considered after other therapy, for advanced disease, or in a plan tailored to the tumour's features. Scans, symptoms, examination and blood tests help the oncology team judge whether treatment is helping.

Take your pathology and scan reports to the oncology appointment if you have them. Ask whether testing of the tumour changes the treatment choice, whether immunotherapy is being offered alone or with another medicine, and how the response will be checked. Tell the team about autoimmune disease, organ transplants, lung problems and all medicines, because immune treatment can affect healthy organs. Keep a record of new symptoms between treatment visits.

Contact your oncology team promptly for new breathlessness, chest pain, severe diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin, marked weakness, confusion, a widespread rash, or much less urine. These symptoms can reflect inflammation caused by an activated immune system and may need assessment quickly. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting or sudden confusion.
