How effective is imiquimod treatment for actinic keratosis?

Actinic keratosis is a sun-related rough or scaly patch that can sometimes progress to skin cancer. Imiquimod is applied to the skin as prescribed and stimulates local immune activity against abnormal cells. The treated area may become red, swollen, crusted or sore; this inflammation can be part of the expected response, but severe reactions need advice.

It is not suitable for every lesion. A thick, tender, bleeding or changing patch may need examination and possibly a different treatment so that a more serious diagnosis is not overlooked.

Use imiquimod only on the area and schedule prescribed for you. Do not apply it to broken skin, eyes, lips or other sites unless specifically instructed. Wash hands after application, keep follow-up appointments and tell the clinician about medicines or conditions that affect immunity.

Gentle cleansing and the recommended bland moisturiser may make irritation easier to manage. Protect treated and untreated skin from ultraviolet exposure with shade, clothing and sunscreen. Do not stop or extend the course on your own; contact the prescriber if the reaction is hard to tolerate.

Contact the prescriber for spreading inflammation, severe pain, pus, fever, marked swelling or a reaction that prevents normal daily activities. Arrange review if the patch persists, thickens, bleeds or changes after the course.
