How effective is hysteroscopic polypectomy for cervical polyps?

A hysteroscope gives the clinician a direct view through the cervix. A small instrument can then separate the polyp from its attachment, allowing the removed tissue to be sent for laboratory assessment. Removing the growth may reduce bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, discharge, or the sensation of a mass when the polyp was responsible.

Effectiveness is less certain when symptoms come from fibroids, infection, hormonal changes, or another cervical problem. The procedure treats the visible polyp; it does not automatically correct every cause of abnormal bleeding.

Ask whether the procedure will use local or general anaesthesia, whether you need someone to accompany you, and when the tissue result will be available. Mild cramping and light spotting may occur afterward. Follow the clinic’s instructions about tampons, sex, bathing, and exercise while the cervix heals, and attend the review appointment even if bleeding improves.

Call the treating team for bleeding that is becoming heavier, pain that is not settling, fever, chills, or foul-smelling discharge. Get urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, fainting, or difficulty breathing.

Where is the polyp attached? Will the entire lesion be removed and examined? What symptoms should improve, and what would suggest another cause? How will recurrence be checked?
