How effective is hysterectomy for uterine prolapse?

Uterine prolapse happens when pelvic floor muscles and connective tissues no longer support the uterus adequately. Removing the uterus may be combined with surgery that lifts and supports the top of the vagina, and other repairs may be needed if the bladder or rectum also bulges. A hysterectomy therefore addresses one part of the anatomy; the operation’s plan should include the whole pelvic support system. Symptoms such as pressure, a vaginal bulge, urinary leakage, difficulty emptying the bladder, or bowel problems may improve differently depending on their cause.

A pelvic examination helps identify which compartments are affected and whether a pessary, pelvic floor physiotherapy, or another operation could meet your goals. Tell your clinician about urinary, bowel, sexual, and vaginal symptoms, previous pelvic surgery, and whether you may want future pregnancy. Ask which repairs will accompany hysterectomy, whether the cervix remains, how lifting and exercise will be restricted, and how constipation or coughing will be managed during recovery.

Arrange prompt assessment for a vaginal bulge that cannot be pushed back, inability to pass urine, severe pelvic pain, or bleeding from irritated tissue. After surgery, contact your team for fever, worsening pain, heavy bleeding, foul discharge, wound concerns, or new difficulty urinating. Emergency help is needed for collapse, severe breathlessness, or sudden chest pain.
