How effective is hysterectomy for endometriosis?

Endometriosis is tissue resembling the womb lining growing elsewhere in the pelvis. Removing the uterus may address heavy bleeding, uterine pain, or adenomyosis when these are part of the problem. It does not automatically remove deposits on the ovaries, bowel, bladder, or pelvic lining. The operation may be considered after other treatments have not provided enough relief, especially when pregnancy is no longer planned. Whether the ovaries are removed is a separate decision; keeping them can avoid immediate loss of ovarian hormones, while removing them has additional consequences and is not suitable for everyone.

Ask for a review that maps pain, bleeding, bowel or bladder symptoms, previous operations, and fertility wishes. A gynaecologist can explain whether removing visible endometriosis at the same operation is planned and which surgical route fits your anatomy. Discuss alternatives such as hormonal treatment, pain management, or excision of endometriosis without hysterectomy. Before consenting, ask what symptoms the operation is expected to target, what may remain, and how recovery could affect work, sex, and daily activity.

After surgery, contact your surgical team promptly for increasing abdominal pain, fever, worsening wound redness, heavy vaginal bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, repeated vomiting, or difficulty passing urine. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or sudden one-sided leg swelling. Before surgery, urgent assessment is appropriate for severe pelvic pain with faintness, heavy bleeding, or a possible pregnancy.
