How effective is hysterectomy for adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows into the uterine muscle. Removing the uterus removes the site of that disease, so heavy menstrual bleeding and uterine cramping may stop. Hysterectomy does not automatically remove the ovaries; whether they remain depends on your age, symptoms, risk factors and surgical plan.

If the ovaries remain, they can continue producing hormones, so surgery does not necessarily cause immediate menopause. Hysterectomy cannot treat pain from another condition, and recovery, risks and route of surgery vary.

Discuss medicines, a hormonal intrauterine device, other hormonal treatment and uterus-preserving procedures if pregnancy or fertility matters to you. Ask the surgeon which organs would be removed, how the operation would be performed, expected recovery, and how pain or bleeding will be assessed afterward.

Share your bleeding pattern, pain severity, anaemia history, prior operations and plans for pregnancy. Consider a second specialist opinion when the decision feels uncertain; the choice should reflect symptom burden, alternatives and your reproductive goals.

After surgery, seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, fever, worsening abdominal pain, faintness, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or a painful swollen leg. Contact the surgical team for wound redness, fluid leakage, inability to pass urine or symptoms that are worsening instead of settling.

Ask whether adenomyosis is the confirmed cause of your symptoms, which alternatives remain, whether the ovaries and cervix would stay, and how surgery affects fertility and menopause. Ask about recovery restrictions and the symptoms that require urgent review.
