How effective is hormone therapy for DCIS?

DCIS is abnormal cell growth confined to a breast duct. Tissue testing can show whether the cells carry oestrogen or progesterone receptors. Hormone therapy acts throughout the body by reducing or blocking these signals. It is not a treatment that physically removes DCIS, so surgery or another local approach may still be needed.

The possible benefit is weighed against effects such as hot flushes, vaginal symptoms, menstrual changes, joint discomfort and bone effects. The choice also depends on whether you have had breast-conserving surgery, your menopause status and your personal health risks.

Ask whether the DCIS is hormone-receptor positive and what local treatment has been recommended. Review medicines, pregnancy plans, contraception, clot history and bone health before starting. Keep scheduled breast imaging and follow-up appointments. If taking a tablet, use it as directed and discuss side effects before missing doses or stopping.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, or a painful swollen leg. Contact the breast team about new breast changes, unexpected bleeding or side effects that interfere with daily life. These symptoms need assessment; they do not by themselves show that DCIS has returned.
