How effective is hormone replacement therapy for Turner syndrome?

Turner syndrome can involve reduced ovarian hormone production. Oestrogen replacement may help trigger and support pubertal changes, menstrual development and bone strength. A progestogen may be added after the uterine lining has been exposed to oestrogen, depending on the person’s situation. Treatment may also help with vaginal dryness, hot flushes and other low-hormone symptoms.

Hormone therapy does not correct chromosome differences or replace care for heart, kidney, hearing, thyroid or other health needs associated with Turner syndrome. Fertility planning is a separate conversation because hormone replacement does not by itself restore ovarian function.

Arrange follow-up with an endocrinologist or gynaecologist familiar with Turner syndrome. They can choose a starting approach, adjust the dose gradually when appropriate, and review bleeding, symptoms, blood pressure and bone health. Tell the clinician about migraine, liver disease, clotting history, unexplained bleeding and medicines or supplements before treatment begins.

Keep a record of bleeding patterns, headaches, breast symptoms and any new concerns. Do not stop or change hormones without advice, because the safest plan depends on age, puberty stage, uterus, ovaries, other medical conditions and personal goals.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or severe neurological symptoms while using hormones. Contact the prescribing clinician promptly for heavy or persistent bleeding, a new breast lump, severe headache, yellowing skin or a marked mood change.
