How effective is HIFU skin lifting for submental fullness?

A fuller area under the chin can reflect a fat pad, loose skin, muscle anatomy, posture or a combination of factors. HIFU sends focused ultrasound energy into selected tissue layers and is used mainly to encourage contraction and tightening. It may refine the contour when lax skin contributes to the fold, but it cannot be expected to remove a substantial fat pad.

The most useful assessment separates skin laxity from volume. Your clinician may also consider the neck profile, jawline definition and the position of nearby nerves and blood vessels when discussing treatment.

Ask for an in-person examination before choosing HIFU. Discuss whether the goal is tighter skin, less fullness or a sharper contour, and what result is realistic for your tissue. If fat is the dominant factor, ask about alternatives and how their risks differ.

Follow instructions about skincare, medicines and aftercare from the treating clinic. Tenderness, swelling, redness or temporary sensitivity can occur. Avoid pressing or massaging the area unless your clinician specifically recommends it.

Contact the provider for worsening pain, significant swelling, blistering, difficulty swallowing, persistent numbness or a new change in lower-face movement. Seek urgent care if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, or if sudden weakness develops.

Ask: Is my fullness mainly loose skin or fat? What layer will HIFU target? How will you avoid sensitive structures under the chin? What change should I expect, when will it appear, and which option would address volume more directly?
