How effective is HIFU skin lifting for sun-damaged skin?

Photoaging can involve reduced elasticity, uneven colour, rough texture, fine lines and visible sun spots. HIFU uses focused ultrasound beneath the surface to heat selected tissue and stimulate a healing response associated with tightening. Its effect is directed mainly at laxity, not at pigment or surface roughness.

A clinician should distinguish sun-related changes from lesions that need separate examination. Skin that is thin, highly damaged or irritated may need a different sequence of care. Treating laxity while leaving sun exposure unaddressed can limit the overall cosmetic benefit.

Have the area assessed in good light and describe any changing, bleeding or scabbing spots before an aesthetic procedure. Discuss whether HIFU is intended for the face, neck or another area, and whether another treatment is better suited to colour or texture concerns.

Use the recommended aftercare and protect treated skin from direct sun with shade, clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen as advised. Mild redness, swelling, tenderness or sensitivity may occur. Do not pick irritated areas, and report symptoms that become more intense instead of settling.

Arrange a skin review for a spot that changes in size, shape or colour, repeatedly bleeds, develops a persistent sore or fails to heal. Contact the treatment provider for blistering, severe pain, spreading swelling or persistent altered sensation after HIFU.
