How effective is HER2-targeted therapy for stomach cancer?

Some stomach cancers have increased HER2 activity. A tissue sample can be tested to determine whether a HER2-directed medicine is relevant. The result is interpreted alongside the cancer's location, stage, spread, symptoms, general health and other tumour markers. Targeted treatment may be combined with chemotherapy or other medicines when cancer cannot be removed surgically; in some situations, surgery and treatment before or after surgery are considered.

Effectiveness is assessed by symptoms, examination and scans. A response may involve smaller tumours or reduced cancer activity, while stable disease can mean that growth is being held back. If the cancer progresses or side effects become difficult, the team may revise the combination or move to another option.

Ask whether HER2 was tested on a suitable biopsy and whether any repeat or additional testing is needed. Discuss the goal of treatment and how it fits with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery or symptom control. Tell the team about heart or lung conditions, previous drug reactions, weight or eating difficulties, and every medicine you take.

Keep appointments for blood tests and imaging. Report reduced appetite, worsening swallowing, vomiting, diarrhoea, pain, fatigue or new symptoms so that nutrition, hydration and symptom relief can be addressed alongside cancer treatment.

Seek prompt medical advice for inability to keep fluids down, black or bloody vomit or stools, severe abdominal pain, fever, increasing breathlessness, chest discomfort, fainting or a rapidly spreading rash. Emergency help is needed for collapse, severe breathing difficulty or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
